Southern Wayne emerged victorious on the baseball and softball diamonds, earned a first-place team finish in a Quad County 3A outdoor track meet and girls’ soccer tied a county rival on the pitch Wednesday evening.
Baseball
GOLDSBORO — Tyler Odom fired a no-hitter through three innings during Southern Wayne’s 15-5, mercy-rule triumph over county rival Goldsboro.
Odom retired six of nine batters he faced on strikeouts.
Brayden McKee tossed three innings of three-hit, two-strikeout relief. Bullpen mate Alex Ferrell allowed one hit and fanned two Cougars during the fifth inning.
The Saints’ defense posted an error-free effort.
Offensively, Cuyler Daly batted 3-for-4 with a career-high six RBI.
Drew Sweet went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ferrell, Odom, Jake Coates (three RBI) and Zack Aman provided one hit apiece.
The Saints (5-0 overall) launch their Quad County 3A campaign at East Wake next Tuesday.
Softball
GOLDSBORO — Southern Wayne halted a three-game skid with an 8-6 triumph over county rival Goldsboro.
Makayla Smith, Morgan Brinberry (two RBI) and Laura Summerlin (RBI) cranked out three hits apiece.
Jocelyn Bond (RBI) and senior Gracie Hinson each supplied two hits. Reagan Stribble (two stolen bases), Jocelin Aguilar (RBI) and Megan Long (RBI) registered one hit apiece.
Stribble emerged as the winning pitcher. The right-hander sat down 10 Cougars on strikeouts and gave up six earned runs on 13 hits.
Southern Wayne (2-3) visits Quad County 3A rival East Wake next Tuesday.
Girls’ soccer
GOLDSBORO — Goalie Amya Smith collected six saves and helped lead Southern Wayne to a 1-1, non-conference draw over Goldsboro at Cougar Stadium.
Karen Flores tallied the Saints’ lone goal off Kely Barrios’ assist. Barrios has doled out six assists during her last three outings.
The Saints snapped a four-game skid against the Cougars, who hold a 2-4-2 edge in the series since 2013. Southern Wayne is now 9-35-3 against county opposition since 2013.
Southern Wayne (3-1-1) starts Quad County 3A play next Tuesday at East Wake.
Outdoor track
WENDELL — Ta’Niyah Glaspie and Jy’Asha Cousins continued their season-long dominance in sprint events during a four-team, Quad County 3A outdoor track meet contested at West Johnston High School on Wednesday afternoon.
In all, six Saints recorded top-3 marks in nine individual events.
Glaspie bested the competition in the 100-meter dash (12.3 seconds) and 200 dash (26.3). Cousins, a sophomore, claimed the 100-meter hurdles (15.7) and 300 hurdles (53.6).
Sophia Marshall placed second in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 5 inches.
Third-place finishers were Olivia Ruiz (800 run), Iyanah Southerland (discus, shot put) and Elaina Lane (long jump).
SW claimed the 4×1 and 4×2 relays, and edged county rival Charles B. Aycock, 66-65, to win the four-team meet. Smithfield-Selma also competed.
On the boys’ side, the Saints’ Jaylyn Bowden won the long jump with a leap of 19-4.5.
Skervenson Aphael took second in the 110 hurdles (19.9).
Malachi Bass ended up second in the triple jump (35-9.5) and secured third in the long jump (17-9.5).
Adam Cain placed third in the discus (101-4) and shot put (39-3).
Southern Wayne returns to track March 15 at Fike.
