DUDLEY — South Johnston wrapped up three singles points within a 45-minute stretch and cruised past Southern Wayne, 9-0, on the Quad County 3A boys’ tennis scene Wednesday afternoon.

“South Johnston is a seasoned team that only lost one senior from last year’s team,” Saints head coach David Van Dyke said. “They finished sixth last year in the conference, but should be battling for top three this year. I’m a firm believer in staying together and putting in hard work.

“Good things happen when you don’t lose many seniors.”

Van Dyke said senior Ian Whipkey was named the Saints’ player of the match. He dropped a straight-set decision to the Trojans’ Logan Tyler at No. 5 singles.

Southern Wayne (0-5 overall, 0-5 QCC) begins a three-match road swing next Tuesday at Smithfield-Selma.
