To those much is given, much is expected. It is an oft-used phrase, one spoken about in the Bible and reflected in the charitable giving we see played out day after day in our communities as people reach deep into their pockets and provide some of what they’ve been given to help others.

Whether it’s a Rotary Club function, a school fund-raising or a local fish fry, one can count on the Mount Olive community — businesses and individuals, alike — to go the distance when it comes to helping better life for all.

That’s why it’s really no surprise to see that the University of Mount Olive’s sixth annual Giving Day was such a tremendous success.

What the community does is mirrored by the university and vice-versa, and it is teaching young adults the value of giving back at the same time, as students, faculty, staff and the community joined together to make Tuesday’s Giving Day the most successful fundraising event in the university’s history.

According to university officials more than 430 donors collectively gave nearly $204,000 to support various areas of the university, more than double last year’s effort.

Mount Olive is more than fortunate to have UMO in its midst. The growing university does nothing but good for the community in which it sits, and the community recognizes that fact and tries to support the endeavors undertaken at the school.

It’s a great partnership reflected not only in what individuals, businesses, faculty and staff do for the university, but also in what students and alumni do as well.

We believe giving back is important, whether that giving is about money or time, both vital cogs in the wheels of growth at the university but also throughout the town of Mount Olive.

We tip our hats to all those involved in the Day of Giving, and we encourage those who haven’t given yet to do so if they can.

Individuals who missed the 24-hours event, but would still like to contribute can do so by going to www.umo.edu/giving-day. For a recap of the day, go to https://vimeo.com/815035381.
