Dr. Tanya Wynn has been named the new National President of the Carver High School Alumni and Friends Association, stepping into a role deeply rooted in her family history. This role had previously been held by the Mayor of Mount Olive, Dr. Jerome Newton.
Wynn’s father, Al Southerland, served as the historic organization’s very first national president, establishing a multi-generational commitment to preserving the school’s legacy. Southerland is a prominent and highly active community member. Wynn’s grandmother, Nellie Southerland Williams, was also one of the founders of Carver High School Alumni.
Wynn brings a distinguished 25-year career in public education to the presidency. She has served two terms as the Vice President of the local chapter of this organization. She previously served students and families in Wayne and Duplin counties and currently works as a school administrator in Johnston County. Wynn earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2017 and holds a license as a curriculum specialist, principal and superintendent for North Carolina. Her deep roots in regional education underpin her lifelong passion for keeping the history and community spirit of Carver High School alive.
Serving alongside Wynn in the new administration is Adrienne Bouie-Best, who has been appointed as National Vice President.
The new leadership team enters office with a clear vision for the future of the association. Wynn and Bouie-Best have pledged to grow the organization’s membership, strengthen alumni networks, and increase community engagement by prioritizing transparency and collaboration across all initiatives.
