Yard waste continues to pile up around town as officials wait for the trash truck to be repaired.

The 20-year-old vehicle has piled up more maintenance hours than work time.

Residents have complained and inquired about when their trash will get picked up.

“It should be back in operation this week sometime,” said Jammie Royall, town manager. “I just hope we can get through this year using it, and I already see that we are going to have to have a new one next year.”

Royall estimated a new truck would cost between $175,000 to $200,000. The town expects to handle the purchase through Enterprise Fleet Management in Charlotte.

The town is currently using a backhoe to handle trash pickup.
