Unity for the Community: History in the Making will be the theme for Mount Olive’s 15th annual Black History Month Parade.
The parade, sponsored by the Unity Organization, will be held Saturday, Feb. 25. The rain date is March 4.
The Rev. Dwight Merritt will serve as grand marshal.
“I want to get all of the ministers together, black, white — they are going to lead them out,” said parade organizer and town Commissioner Vicky Darden. “When they get in front of the Piggly Wiggly, they are going to stop and they are going to pray.”
Darden said she is asking local funeral home officials march behind the pastors.
The lineup will be held from 11 a.m. to noon along Talton Avenue. Signs will be in place to direct entries to the lineup area.
The parade will step off at 1 p.m.
The route will follow Talton Avenue to Breazeale Avenue where it will turn left (south). It will follow Breazeale Avenue south to the Carver Cultural Center where the parade will disband.
“I want to thank the late Ora Truzy for helping to organize the first parade,” Darden said. “I also want to thank Sheila Oates and Ricky Faire.”
Parade entry applications are available at the Goldsboro branch of the Wayne County Library, 1001 East Ash St., Goldsboro and Mount Olive Town Hall, 114 E. James St.
