Duplin County Schools Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan died on Thursday after a battle with cancer. He had served as superintendent for 15 years, and in 2024, his contract was extended by the Board of Education until 2028.
The Duplin County Board of Education released the following statement following Obasohan’s death:
“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved Superintendent, Dr. Austin Obasohan, who departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior today, July 24, 2025. Affectionately known as ‘Dr. O,’ he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
For over 15 years, Dr. Obasohan served Duplin County Schools with unwavering dedication, humility, and an enduring commitment to the well-being of each person in our school family. His leadership was never one of command, but of service, always focused on uplifting and guiding us all. Through his kindness, wisdom, and humility, he touched the lives of each of us, creating an environment where we could all thrive and grow together as ‘One Family.’ His steadfast leadership, faith, and deep commitment to the students, staff, and families of our school community will forever be remembered.”
The statement went on to call Dr. Obasohan “more than an administrator, he was a servant leader, a mentor, and a source of strength and inspiration.”
“His legacy of compassion, integrity, and excellence will continue to guide us in the days ahead,” the statement continued. “As a humble servant of God, Dr. Obasohan would want us to continue moving forward with faith, compassion, and unity, carrying with us the lessons he taught and the values he lived by. His legacy is not in titles or achievements, but in the lasting relationships he built and the profound impact he made in the hearts of those who worked alongside him.”
