James Kenan’s Yaneidi Cruz plays aggressively against Wallace Rose-Hill’s Bri Maradiaga, while teammate Arely Patino comes into the picture for backup.
WARSAW — James Kenan protected its home turf Thursday evening with a convincing 3-0 win over Wallace-Rose Hill in a conference matchup, powered by strong team chemistry, steady midfield play, and a well-timed scoring attack.
The Tigers came out aggressive from the start, applying early pressure in Wallace-Rose Hill’s half of the field. Both sides moved the ball well through the midfield in the opening minutes, but James Kenan struck first at the 25:32 mark. Freshman Yaneidi Cruz found space at the top of the box and placed a low shot past the Wallace keeper to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Wallace-Rose Hill looked to respond with more possession play, as defenders Gabby Debnam, Juliet Maradiaga, and Jaezlyn Carvajal helped slow down James Kenan’s push. Midfielder Bella Sabillon made several runs to help transition the ball forward, but clear scoring chances were hard to come by against the Tigers’ organized back line, led by Alison Duenas and Genesis Urbina.
The Bulldogs managed to force a turnover at the 16:35 mark, clearing the ball away from a James Kenan push, but it was short-lived. The Tigers’ offense kept probing, and a sequence involving Karla Diaz’s throw-in to Arely Patino eventually set up an attempt by Katherine Enamorado. Though that shot was deflected, James Kenan kept the pressure on.
Wallace regained some momentum with 11 minutes left in the half, increasing their pace and pushing numbers forward. Bri Maradiaga and Linzel Osorio combined on a run that created a half-chance, but it didn’t result in a shot on goal.
James Kenan capitalized just before halftime. With under a minute remaining, Enamorado slipped past a defender and calmly slotted home her shot to double the lead at 2-0 with just 54 seconds left in the half, sending the home crowd in Warsaw into celebration mode.
Coming out of the break, Wallace-Rose Hill tried to close the gap early. At 26:42, Karla Diaz made a run for James Kenan and nearly scored on a low roller, but the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper reacted quickly to keep it out.
Both teams exchanged possessions for the next several minutes, with Wallace again pushing through Salma Sabillon and Nahela Herrera, while James Kenan’s midfield trio—Josselyn Gomez, Arely Patino, and Karla Diaz—maintained their rhythm and dictated the tempo.
A well-executed passing combination paid off for James Kenan at the 19:59 mark. Gomez’s throw-in reached Enamorado, who quickly connected with Ashley Licona Osorio. The sophomore maneuvered through the Wallace defense and fired a precise shot into the corner to make it 3-0.
Wallace nearly answered right after, but a long shot was calmly gathered by James Kenan’s keeper. Just 17 seconds after the third goal, Wallace made another forward push, but Licona Osorio tracked back to help shut down the attempt.
With 14:30 left, Enamorado and Licona Osorio worked a give-and-go that ended in a collision between Licona Osorio and a Wallace defender near the box. The play continued, but James Kenan earned a penalty kick a few minutes later, at 11:45. The shot went just wide, keeping the margin at 3-0.
Despite the miss, James Kenan didn’t let up. Wallace-Rose Hill, to their credit, continued to battle. Midfielder Yaslin Melendez made a strong run from midfield at the 8:56 mark but was stopped just outside the area.
Shania Jones contributed a good throw-in for James Kenan with under five minutes left, and Duenas helped keep the back line intact as Wallace pressed in the closing minutes. Wallace earned a penalty kick with 4:30 to play, but it was saved by the Tigers’ goalkeeper, preserving the shutout.
The final minutes saw back-and-forth action as both sides continued to press, but no additional goals were scored.
James Kenan’s win was the result of clean execution on both sides of the ball. Cruz, Enamorado, and Licona Osorio each found the back of the net, while Diaz and Gomez provided support with their distribution and hustle. Defensively, Duenas and Urbina anchored the line with poise, and the Tigers’ goalkeeper made timely stops to secure the clean sheet.
For Wallace-Rose Hill, several players stood out despite the scoreline. Debnam and Carvajal provided strong defensive coverage, while Bella Sabillon and Linzel Osorio showed creativity in the midfield. Though they struggled to finish their chances, the Bulldogs created moments of danger and demonstrated competitive energy throughout the contest.
The win gives James Kenan a boost in the conference standings as the regular season winds down. Wallace-Rose Hill will look to regroup and prepare for their next matchup, focusing on converting possession into goals.
