Mount Olive police are investigating a Thursday afternoon shooting at a local convenience store that left one person dead.

Little information can be released because it is an ongoing investigation, said Chief of Police Jason Hughes. However, the shooting does not appear to be random, he noted.

Police received a 911 call at 2:27 p.m. concerning a shooting at the store located at 242 Franklin St. in the southern part of town.

“It is a convenience store,” Hughes affirmed. “The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene, and the investigation is continuing.

Hughes said he could not comment on the age or sex of the victim or how the shooting occurred. Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin, he said.

Hughes expects his office to issue a press release sometime Friday, hopefully with more details, including the victim’s name.

“I don’t know how much more information (will be available),” he said. “I would like to hope that I can give you a lot more, but that will depend on how it (investigation) goes. We have not arrested anybody it — it is still a very active investigation.

“Nothing at this point points to it being random. We appreciate the assistance from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. They provided a lot of assistance to us, and we really appreciate that. We appreciate Wayne County EMS and Wayne County dispatch.”
