GOLDSBORO — Southern Wayne launched its 2024-2025 basketball campaigns – varsity boys, varsity girls and JV boys Friday evening at county rival Goldsboro High.

Sophomore guard Kairell Evans dropped in 26 points during the boys’ 65-63 loss inside venerable Norvell T. Lee Gym. Jaylen Carr collected 11 points, while Douglas Wynn Jr. contributed eight points.

“[Our guys] struggled and didn’t play to their abilities as a unit,” SW head coach Brian West said. “The Cougars were more consistent attacking the boards and putting pressure on our defense that got us out of position to get second-chance points.

“We are young and a few guys showed up. [The] game is something for us to build on … looking forward to this young group’s process.”

Goldsboro girls seized command with a 20-point, second-quarter outburst and prevailed 61-37.

Nevaeh Hines-Bass pumped in 17 points and snared four rebounds for the Saints. Azariah Jordan contributed eight points, one steal and one assist.

Kymora Stokes and Destiny Bullock scored four points apiece. Kylie Hyde and NiYanna Carr each tallied two points. Carr pulled down four rebounds, while Hyde had two rebounds.

Salik Council poured in 12 points to lead Southern Wayne past Goldsboro, 43-32, in JV action. Jhontae King added 11 points, while Tristan King supplied four points and four rebounds.

“This young group is going to be interested moving forward,” West said.

Southern Wayne returns to action Nov. 22 at county rival Eastern Wayne. The Warriors’ football team advanced to the second round of the NC High School Athletic Association 2A football playoffs.
