CALYPSO — The Junior and Senior Beta Clubs at North Duplin Junior/Senior High School have made it their mission to put community service at the forefront of their activities.
The students and club sponsors have put forth tremendous efforts to expand their school and community footprint through various service projects.
Most recently, the club hosted their fifth annual “Light Up The Night” lawn event Nov. 7 to honor United States veterans. Beta Club members sold luminaries for $5. More than 250 veterans were honored and their names were read during the ceremony.
“It is such a gorgeous sight to see all of the luminaries shining while the marching band plays ‘America the Beautiful,’” said Natalie Pope, Senior Beta sponsor. “It is by far one of my favorite events the club hosts throughout the year. It is truly meaningful and worth all of the time and eort that goes into it.”
Junior Beta Club member and Boy Scout Wesley Parks, and fellow Eagle Scouts Sam Carr and Genaro Pacheco presented the colors in true military fashion.
North Duplin raised $550 for the NC State Veterans Home in Kinston.
Senior Beta Club President Baker Sumner initiated and helped execute a 5K Color Run for cancer awareness, which was held Oct. 19 on campus. A portion of the proceeds were donated to The Outlaw Foundation (O3). Founded in 2012 by the Bill Outlaw Family, the organization’s mission is to assist families who are currently battling cancer.
The Foundation provides financial and emotional support.
Bill Outlaw, a cancer survivor, started the race with a short speech and a prayer. The event marked what Baker said she is proud to help conceive the run and hopes it will become an annual event at North Duplin.
During September, the Beta Club organized a “Pack the Pantry” initiative that amassed nearly 200 items of food. The club delivered the food to the Calypso Fire Department, which sent the donation to the western part of North Carolina following the devastation from Hurricane Helene.
After a busy 2024, the North Duplin Beta members hope to continue their incredible service projects into the new year. They truly hope to help make a difference in the lives of those who reside within their community.
