GOLDSBORO — Sophomore Eric Sosa Rodriguez logged his first-career hat trick (three goals) during Spring Creek’s 6-0 triumph over Eastern Wayne in Neuse Six 2A play Tuesday evening.

Homar Lopez Castro provided two goals and one assist. Aiden Javier supplied one goal. Yoimar Carias Sequeira supplied two assists. Jeheili Velasquez Sanchez and Luis Robiero Velasquez each filed one assist in the scorebook.

The Gators led 3-0 at halftime.

Senior net-minder Edgar Avila Anguiano recorded the shutout between the pipes. The Gators have not conceded a goal for 580 consecutive minutes.

Spring Creek (10-7-2 overall, 6-0-0 Neuse Six 2A) return home Thursday to face Princeton. Kickoff is 6 p.m. in “The Swamp.”

SW’s Brewer finishes third

BENSON — Southern Wayne’s Gage Brewer posted a third-place finish in the 2024 Quad County 3A boys’ cross country championship meet contested Tuesday afternoon.

Brewer ran the 5k course in 17 minutes, 35 seconds.

“This kid works extremely hard and made it his means to say ‘Coach West, if you coach, I’ll run’,” said SW head coach Brian West. “[Am] honored to coach a great young man like this who also pushed his teammates to get fourth place as a team with just five individuals.

“The hard work these young men have been putting in over the [past] months, I’m proud of them for finishing the mission together.”

Saints third in final QCC golf outing

WENDELL — Southern Wayne finished third overall as team in the 2024 Quad County 3A girls’ golf championship contested Tuesday afternoon at Wendell Country Club.

Regan Stribble birdied the par-3, No. 8 hole and shared fifth place individually. Fellow regional qualifier Chloe Sullivan tied for 13th.

Saints head coach Trae McKee said, “Avery Jennette and Kenzi Aycock finished their senior campaigns with a solid showing and some of the best shots of the year.”

West Johnston’s Jenna Underwood shot 77 and earned QCC Player-of-the-Year accolades. She recorded an even-par 35 on the back nine.

Wilson Fike claimed the QCC team crown.

The NC High School Athletic Association eastern regionals are next Monday at Chicora Country Club in Dunn.

East Duplin tops JK soccer

BEULAVILLE — Yoskar Canales converted a penalty kick to help lead East Duplin past county and East Central 2A soccer rival James Kenan, 2-1, on Tuesday evening.

Orlando Rodriguez provided one goal for the Panthers, who claimed a regular-season sweep of the Tigers.

Goalie Gabriel Faulkner recorded 10 saves.

East Duplin improved to 10-5-1 overall and 7-1-0 in league matters this season.

James Kenan (9-4-0 overall, 5-2-0 ECC) is the guest of South Lenoir (9-7-1, 1-6-0) today. Kickoff is 6 p.m. in Deep Run.

Cougars eliminate Rebels

CALYPSO — Neuse Charter needed four sets to eliminate North Duplin 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 from the Carolina 1A volleyball tournament Tuesday evening.

The second-seeded Cougars (16-7 overall) meet top-seeded and regular-season champion Rosewood (21-2) today. Match time is 6 p.m. inside Kaleel Gymnasium on the North Duplin campus.

Junior setter Lilly Fulghum stuffed her stat sheet with 17 assists, six digs, two blocks and three service aces during the semifinal-round contest.

Tateyawna Faison supplied six kills and eight blocks. Maggie Brown logged five kills, while Abigeal Norris Brown collected three kills and two blocks.

Eva Quintanilla registered five kills and two blocks.

Marissa Bernal emerged as the defensive leader with 12 digs. Carrly Strickland picked up eight digs. Ady Spence finished with six digs. Iala Overton and M’Chelle Jaco had five and four digs, respectively.

North Duplin dropped to 12-8 and awaits an at-large bid to the NC High School Athletic Association playoffs.
