DUDLEY — Quad County 3A soccer rivals Southern Wayne and East Wake battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw Wednesday evening.

Alex Trejo tallied the Saints’ lone goal off an assist from Angel Ramirez.

“Pretty even game as the scoreboard shows,” SW head coach Luis Ramirez said. “We had some good opportunities that we were not able to finish, as well as stopping some clear opportunities on goal for them.

“Definitely a a very organized and well-coached team we played against. Proud of the way our boys handled the organization and were able to compete.”

Alan Rubio collected the Warriors’ goal off Liam Hall’s assist.

The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1 and ended regulation with the same score. Neither squad could connect on goal during the two, 10-minute overtime sessions.

EW goalie Edgar Moctezuma Zavala logged seven saves on eight shots during the 100-minute affair.

Southern Wayne (4-8-1 overall, 2-2-1 QCC) returns home next Monday to face West Johnston. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex pitch.

Panthers upend Tigers

WARSAW — Less than 24 hours after claiming an emotional triumph over a county rival, James Kenan couldn’t maintain the momentum Tuesday evening.

Traditional power East Duplin turned back the Tigers, 3-2, in their East Central 2A matchup contested at Bill Taylor Field. James Kenan had its five-match win streak snapped and endured its first league defeat of the season.

Junior Jeffrey Velazquez, senior Orlando Rodriguez and sophomore Brayan Dominguez-Mendez supplied one goal apiece for the Panthers. Junior Yoskar Canales recorded an assist.

Panthers goalie Gabriel Faulkner logged five saves.

East Duplin halted a five-game skid against James Kenan and holds an 11-10-1 edge in the series since 2011. The Panthers (8-5-1 overall, 5-1-0 ECC) entertain Kinston on Monday and welcome the Tigers to Beulaville on Tuesday.

James Kenan (9-3-0) dipped to 5-1 in league matters.

Cougars edge Rebels

SMITHFIELD — Neuse Charter completed its regular-season sweep of North Duplin, 2-1, on the Carolina 1A boys’ soccer scene Wednesday evening.

Senior Andrew Swindell and sophomore Aiden Redig provided one goal apiece for the Cougars. Senior Alex Candes collected an assist.

North Duplin did not submit details.

The Rebels (1-4-1 overall, 1-4-1 Carolina) travel to Lakewood next Monday. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
