GOLDSBORO — A slow-moving storm off the North Carolina coast has prompted Wayne County Public Schools officials to cancel all after-school activities today.

“All after-school programs and school-sponsored events have been canceled for this afternoon,” according to the statement released by WCPS mid-morning Monday. “This includes athletic practices and games, 4-H programs, tutoring, staff meetings, PTA meetings [and parent nights.”

The US National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for portions of central North Carolina, that includes Wayne and Duplin counties. Officials said to expect wind gusts in the 35- to 45-mph range, which could result in downed trees and power lines.

Uncertainty remains in the rainfall forecast, which is dependent on the eventual track and strength of the system. Heavy rainfall is expected today and throughout Tuesday. Local rainfall totals could be between four and eight inches, which includes a slight risk for flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Southern Wayne’s Quad County golf match at Lane Tree Golf Club, home tennis match with West Johnston and Quad County soccer opener at East Wake will be rescheduled.

Three middle school soccer games — Grantham at Norwayne, Spring Creek at Mount Olive and Brogden at Rosewood — are also postponed.

No make-up dates have been announced.
