KENANSVILLE — Duplin County Public Schools officials announced schedule changes Tuesday afternoon due to adverse weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Debby.

All extra-curricular activities have been cancelled.

Regular-season play for fall sports begins Aug. 12. Football season officially starts Aug. 23.

Optional workdays are available Wednesday through Friday for all 11- and 12-month employees, including Duplin Early College staff.

“Employees who feel safe to work may choose to work or employees may opt to take leave for these days,” according to a DCPS press release.

Duplin Early College starts Aug. 12.

Forecasts expect TS Debby to bring torrential rains and strong winds, which could lead to dangerous flooding. Outer rain bands from the storm can cause heavy downpours and possibly spurn tornados.

According to NC Emergency Management, some areas in Wayne and Duplin counties could see as much as 15 inches of rain. Local law enforcement encourages drivers to turn around and find an alternate route of travel if they encounter flooded roads.

Duke Energy reminds drivers to stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires. Residents are asked to report any damage caused by the storm.

Flood watches remain in effect until Friday.
