Fourteen University of Mount Olive junior and senior Honors students and their chaperons recently embarked on a seven-day journey to Spain and Portugal. The trip destination, a decision made by the junior class during the fall semester of the 2023-2024 school year, was the culmination of months of planning and research.
The Decision and Preparation
Throughout the fall semester, the junior class deliberated various destinations, meticulously comparing costs and experiences before settling on Spain and Portugal, two culturally rich countries on the Iberian Peninsula. The subsequent two semesters were dedicated to thorough research and presentations on these countries, ensuring every student was well-prepared for the journey ahead. Enhancing this preparation, two international UMO students from Spain provided firsthand insights into Spanish culture. Professor of History and Honors Program Co-coordinator Dr. Alan Lamm conducted practical lessons on efficient packing, emphasizing the importance of traveling without checked luggage.
The Journey Begins in Lisbon
The first stop on their journey was to Lisbon, a vibrant and historical area marked by stunning landscapes, monumental structures, and the iconic bridge across the river, which was crafted by the same company responsible for San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Beyond the historical tours, students immersed themselves in Lisbon’s beach life, navigating the city’s train and metro systems to reach the scenic shores. The picturesque rocks and tide pools provided perfect photo opportunities and a chance to dip their toes into the Atlantic Ocean.
Meandering through Madrid via Evora
Continuing their adventure the group traveled to Madrid with a stop in Evora, an agricultural hub renowned for its delectable croissants and scenic views. This detour offered a glimpse into rural Portuguese life and the region’s agricultural contributions.
Upon arrival in Madrid, students adjusted to a six-hour time change. They explored Madrid’s bustling streets, historic bullring, and royal palaces, enriched by the city’s Labor Day festivities.
The Timeless Charm of Toledo
The final leg of their journey took the Honors group to Toledo, a city steeped in history. Students traversed the ancient streets, marveled at cathedrals and castles dating back to the 1200s, and experienced the thrill of ziplining over the city’s waterways. Others delved into the local cuisine, sampling traditional tapas, stews, and paella.
A Fond Farewell
The trip concluded with a heartfelt farewell dinner, celebrating the unforgettable experiences shared. Exhausted yet exhilarated, the group returned with new knowledge, cultural insights, and cherished memories. “The Honors Trip to Spain and Portugal was an enriching experience that broadened our horizons, deepened our appreciation for diverse cultures, and enabled us to forge lasting friendships,” said rising senior Macy Parkhurst. “This journey not only fulfilled our travel abroad goals, it also created lifelong memories for every participant.”
