CALYPSO — North Duplin’s tandem of Hunt Pate and Garris Warren combined for a two-hitter during a 9-1, non-conference triumph over Wayne Christian on Friday evening.
Pate retired three Eagles on strikeouts and permitted an unearned run on one hit in three innings of work. Warren emerged as the winning pitcher with four solid innings on the bump. He issued one hit, three walks and logged three strikeouts.
The Rebel defense turned two double plays behind Pate and Warren.
Catcher Austin Duff and Now Quintanilla registered five putouts apiece, while infielder Holden Williams notched four putouts. Pate recorded two of the team’s seven assists.
Wesley Holmes turned in two-hit, two-RBI performance at the plate. Tanner Kornegay (RBI), Warren and Quintanilla provided one hit apiece. Brady Byrd supplied an RBI.
North Duplin collected 13 stolen bases, including five from Pate.
The Rebels (3-2 overall) return home Monday to face East Duplin. Game time is 6 p.m.
Warriors shock SW
WENDELL — Southern Wayne struggled offensively and couldn’t overcome three errors during a 12-2 loss Friday evening at Quad County 3A baseball foe East Wake.
The Saints mustered just three hits — one each from senior Cuyler Daly, sophomore James Graham and senior Jake Coates. Coates supplied a first-inning, two-RBI triple.
East Wake’s pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts.
Down 2-0, the Warriors erupted for 12 unanswered runs against three SW hurlers – sophomore Kaeden Hinson, junior Brayden McKee and sophomore Hayden Waller. Hinson allowed an earned run on three walks and a hit. McKee surrendered six runs (one earned) on six hits in three-plus innings. Waller yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Southern Wayne (5-2 overall, 1-1 QCC) hits the road Tuesday at West Johnston. Game time is 7 p.m.
WJ softball topples Saints
DUDLEY — Laura Summerlin scratched out two hits during Southern Wayne’s 13-1, mercy-rule loss to perennial Quad County 3A softball power West Johnston on Friday evening.
Summerlin scored the Saints’ lone run on Mckenzie Strickland’s RBI single. Mylee Wiggs added one hit in two official at-bats. Summerlin and Strickland each had one stolen base.
Defensively, Gracie Hinson had five putouts while Summerlin logged four in the scorebook. The Saints did not commit an error.
Morgan Brimberry endured the mound loss. The right-hander permitted 13 runs on 11 hits and nine walks.
Southern Wayne (0-5 overall, 0-2 QCC) continue league play Tuesday at Wilson Hunt. The Saints return home Thursday to face county rival Spring Creek.

CALYPSO — North Duplin’s battle against perennial softball juggernaut Wayne Christian was canceled Friday.
The Rebels (2-1 overall) return home Monday for a non-conference encounter against East Duplin. First pitch is 6 p.m.
Wayne Christian is the two-time defending NC Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 2A state champion. The Eagles (3-0) return home Monday to face Eastern Wayne.
Saints blanked on soccer pitch
DUDLEY — West Johnston scored early and often during a 9-0 victory over Quad County 3A girls’ soccer foe Southern Wayne on Friday evening.
The Panthers have won all five meetings against the Saints in shutout fashion.
Senior goalie Amya Smith recorded 25 saves for Southern Wayne, which endured its third consecutive defeat. The senior has 70 saves this season and 384 for her career.
The Saints (3-3-0, 0-2-0 QCC) return to the pitch Tuesday at QCC member Wilson Hunt. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
Strange, Merritt lead Saints
Southern Wayne finished fifth overall during a recently-contested Quad County 3A boys’ golf match at Reedy Creek Country Club.
Returning east regional qualifiers Joseph Strange and Hunter Merritt posted 18-hole rounds of 84 and 85, respectively, for the Saints. Tyler McKee (86) and Christopher Worth (88) rounded out the team’s four-player score of 343 – eight strokes behind fourth-place Wilson Hunt.
Anthony Culbreth (96) and Noah Hardison (121) also competed.
South Johnston emerged as the top team with a 316. West Johnston scored 322, followed by Wilson Fike (331). Charles B. Aycock (373) finished behind Southern Wayne.
Ethan Boyette (Fike), Hayden Campbell (WJ) and Phillip Lee (SJ) shared medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. West Johnston’s Colby Stephens ended up one stroke behind Boyette, Campbell and Lee.
The Saints, directed by head coach Frank Stauffer, return to action Tuesday at Johnston County Country Club.
Young Gators battling
SEVEN SPRINGS — Spring Creek returns home Tuesday for a non-conference baseball outing against American Leadership Academy-Johnston.
First pitch is 4:30 p.m. in “The Swamp.”
One of three seniors on the roster, multi-sport athlete Orrin Tickles is hitting a crisp .400 at the plate and has stolen six bases. Junior Rylan Kornegay is batting .300 with three stolen bases and 14 putouts defensively.
Sophomore Landon Hines leads the Gators with 19 putouts.
Jayson Hill, a sophomore, has collected the pitching’s staff lone win — an 8-3 conquest of Wayne Prep Academy.
