DUDLEY — Southern Wayne launched its 2024 boys’ tennis campaign in victorious fashion Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 conquest over short-handed East Wake.

The Saints received walkovers at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, and No. 3 doubles.

Senior Matthew Blizzard earned player-of-the-match honors, according to head coach David Van Dyke. Blizzard prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in singles and teamed up with freshman Austin Sampsell for an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Cameren Jones triumphed 7-6 (1), 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Senior Aaron Whiting posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at the No. 1 slot. Fourth-seeded Tyshawn Melvin, a sophomore, won 6-1, 6-2.

It was the Quad County 3A opener for both teams.

Southern Wayne (1-0 overall, 1-0 QCC) returns home Wednesday for a QCC match against West Johnston.
