WILSON — Two Southern Wayne athletes reached the medal podium during the season-ending Quad County 3A Conference indoor track and field championship meet recently held at Fike High School.

Jy’Asha Cousins emerged as the QCC champion in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.14 seconds. Naeem Longmire claimed third in the boys’ 55-meter dash in 7.04 seconds.

Cousins has qualified for the NC High School Athletic Association state championship meet in the 55m hurdles next Saturday in Winston-Salem. The multi-sport athlete claimed sixth in the 300m dash and eight in the 55m dash.

Angel Harmon wound up fifth in both the 55m dash (7.94) and 300m dash (45.94).

Jeremy Whitley took sixth in the boys’ 55m hurdles (10.44), while teammate Jymeer Jones finished seventh in the 500m (1:17.8) and 11th in the 300m (41.14).

“I’m very proud of each of my student-athletes,” said first-year SW head coach and alum Kanesha Jones. “They all made major strides and improvements in their individual events. They made this track season a personal success by getting better and better with each meet.

“Also having Jy’Asha qualify for the indoor state meet was a tremendous accomplishment for her and the entire team. I’m excited to see what the future holds for them.”
