BENSON — Bruised and battered from a physical month of play, Southern Wayne junior Nevaeh Hines-Bass and sophomore Kymora Stokes each turned in a career-best scoring performance Tuesday.
Hines-Bass knocked down 27 points and Stokes tickled the twine for 16 points during a 49-39 conquest of Quad County 3A girls’ basketball rival West Johnston.
Stokes buried three 3-pointers.
The backcourt duo combined to attempt 28 of the Saints’ 35 field goals as a team.
Myhirah Hunter, Yme JeanBaptiste and Wilberline Senatus provided two points apiece. Senatus pulled down seven rebounds. JeanBaptiste grabbed four rebounds for the Saints, who earned just their second “true” road win of the season.
Southern Wayne (7-12 overall, 4-5 QCC) returns home Friday to face Wilson Hunt.
ND boys ease past Hobbton
CALYPSO — North Duplin’s varsity boys seized sole possession of first place in the Carolina 1A ranks Tuesday evening with a 59-46 triumph over Hobbton.

The Rebels (8-9 overall, 4-1 Carolina) entertain defending regular-season champion Neuse Charter Friday.
Rebel girls dominate
CALYPSO — Two-time defending Carolina 1A girls’ basketball champion held Hobbton to single-digit outputs in each quarter during a 59-15 romp Tuesday.
The Rebels picked up their fifth straight win over the Wildcats and 10th overall in their last 11 meetings since 2018.
Meghan Martin recorded five steals and three rebounds. Frontcourt mate Tateyawna Faison notched four steals and three rebounds, while Eva Quintanilla pulled down two boards.
Sophomore Lilly Fulghum grabbed seven rebounds and picked Hobbton for two steals. Reece Outlaw logged nine steals. Backcourt mate Addy Higginbotham collected six assists and three rebounds.
Valaja Wallace and Abigail Norris combined for five rebounds.

Carmon leads Saints in loss
BENSON — Chris Carmon turned in an 18-point effort during Southern Wayne’s 73-63 loss to West Johnston on the Quad County 3A boys’ basketball scene Tuesday.
The Saints endured their second consecutive QCC defeat and fourth in their last five outings.
Kairel Evans knocked down 17 points. Karius Bellamy added nine. Demetrius Elliott and Jaylen Bowden recorded seven points apiece.
Southern Wayne (7-12 overall, 3-6 QCC) entertains Wilson Hunt on Friday.
Wildcats scratch Saints
BENSON — Southern Wayne fell 68-28 to West Johnston in their Quad County 3A junior varsity boys’ basketball clash Tuesday.
Jaden Moore and Ivory Moore tallied nine points apiece for the Saints. Hayden Stroud accounted for six points – two 3-pointers in the first quarter.
Southern Wayne welcomes Hunt to “The Halo” on Friday. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m.
