Rebel JVs fall to Spartans

CALYPSO — Freshman Josiah Swinson drained the game-winning shot with eight seconds remaining, and lifted Union past North Duplin, 56-55, in overtime during their Carolina 1A game Tuesday afternoon.

Swinson’s shot should have never occurred.

Down by one with 38.5 seconds to go, Union gained possession underneath the Rebels’ basket. The official signaled a spot throw-in, but the Union player ran the baseline as he attempted to put the ball in play.

Instead of calling a turnover, the official let play continue.

Swinson found an open lane and dropped in a floater as two North Duplin defenders rushed to get a hand in his face.

Out of timeouts, the Rebels raced down court and watched the game-winning shot bounce off the rim as time expired.

The teams entered overtime knotted at 51-51.

ND’s Lucas Dail hit the front end of a two-shot foul. Teammate Holden Williams converted a steal into layup, which pushed the Rebels’ advantage to 54-51.

Swinson buried a game-tying 3-pointer — one of nine trifectas buried by the Spartans on the day.

Vance Carter connected on the back end of a two-shot foul to put North Duplin back in front, 55-54.

Kayden Bowden led three Rebels in double figures with 13 points. Dail added 12, while Williams finished with 11. Lucas Gregory and Christopher Kornegay chipped in six points apiece.

North Duplin (7-5 overall, 2-1 Carolina) visits Rosewood on Friday.
