WCC’s Practical Nursing Class of 2023

GOLDSBORO – Wayne Community College’s Practical Nursing (PN) class of 2023 achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing, or NCLEX-PN.

The NCLEX-PN is required for practice as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). The test is managed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). After graduating from WCC’s PN program in July of 2023, students became eligible to take the exam.

Students are required to answer a minimum of 85 questions for the NCLEX. A new component was also added to the exam this year, presenting test takers with scenarios that require them to use their best clinical judgment.

The pass rate is counted by students’ first attempts at taking the exam.

“I am so proud of our students and faculty,” said WCC Nursing Department Chair Michelle Garon. “They have worked very hard.”

The PN program’s pass rate must stay within a certain percentage of the national passing average for the NCLEX-PN, which is 86.44 percent. “By having a 100 percent pass rate, we well exceeded what the State Board of Nursing requires us to do,” said Garon.

The College’s PN program has had a 100 percent pass rate in previous years as well. “We’ve implemented new strategies and acquired new resources to support the students in this new testing that they’ve implemented, and it really helped them get back up to 100%,” Garon said. “Even during COVID, we stayed in the upper 90 percent pass rate.”

WCC’s Associate Degree Nursing spring class of 2023 also performed well on their exam, the NCLEX-RN, with a 97 percent pass rate. The national passing average for this exam is 87.74 percent.

PN students receive classroom instruction that they apply in labs, using simulation activities to practice their knowledge. Once they safely succeed in simulation, students implement their skills in clinicals.
