DUDLEY — Southern Wayne concluded opening week on the Quad County 3A basketball scene with a doubleheader sweep of West Johnston on Friday evening.

One ended in dramatic fashion.

Hayden Waller drained the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired in a 63-62 triumph over West Johnston. The Saints secured their third victory inside “The Halo” this season.

Nevaeh Hines-Bass connected on 12 of 14 free throws and notched 23 points in the Saints’ 49-39 victory. Southern Wayne claimed its fifth consecutive win after an 0-7 start to the season.

Southern Wayne’s boys trailed 62-60 with four seconds on the clock.

Waller stood near the Saints’ logo and sprinted to the right corner before West Johnston’s defense could react. Freshman guard Kairel Evans zipped an inbounds pass to Waller, who swished the buzzer-beating jumper as he fell backwards.

Once the horn sounded, the student section mobbed Waller in celebration.

Additional game details weren’t provided.

Southern Wayne’s girls (5-7 overall, 2-0 QCC) carried a nine-point lead into halftime, but West Johnston stayed within striking distance. The Saints led 31-24 after three quarters and kept that advantage during the final eight minutes.

Freshman Azariah Jordan complemented Hines-Bass with a nine-point effort. Kymora Stokes chipped in six points. Kyren Strong and Destiny Bullock tallied four points apiece.

The Saints begin a two-game road swing Tuesday at QCC foe Hunt.
