Southern Wayne and Spring Creek launched their 2023-24 basketball campaigns against non-conference opposition Friday evening.

The Saints traveled to county rival Goldsboro, while the Gators welcomed former Carolina 1A rival Union to “The Swamp.”

Spring Creek continues play at home Tuesday against Jones Senior.

Southern Wayne is off until Nov. 28 when James Kenan pays a visit to Dudley.

Trio leads Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS — Three Spring Creek sophomores recorded double-digit outings during a 74-36 conquest of Union.

Kamron McDaniel pumped in a game-high 22 points, while Brennan Chambers knocked down 21. Jackson Rose added 17 for Spring Creek, which knocked off the Spartans for the fourth time since 2021 and evened the series at 6-6 dating to Dec. 6, 2005.

Senior Justin Raiford chipped in five points.

Eight Gators scratched in the scorebook.

Cougars cruise past SW

GOLDSBORO — Senior Chris Carmon posted a double-double – 17 points, 10 rebounds – during Southern Wayne’s 82-59 loss to Goldsboro inside Norvell T. Lee Gym.

Kairel Evans logged 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. TyQuavious Williams contributed 12 points and six rebounds.

“We are young and that was a big crowd [to place] for the youth we have, but our guys will continue to improve and get better,” SW head coach Brian West said.

Goldsboro claimed its sixth straight win in the series and 23rd overall in 32 meetings since 2007.

Union girls top Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS — Trinity Daniels notched 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds during Spring Creek’s 54-34 loss to Union.

Aliyah Kornegay and Heather Alexander (five points) snared 10 rebounds apiece. Sarah Hess provided three points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior guard Emily Williams recorded one point, four rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Union improved to 6-2 against Spring Creek since 2007.

Tough night for Saints

GOLDSBORO — Goldsboro held Southern Wayne to single-digit scoring in three of four quarters during a 49-25 triumph at Norvell T. Lee Gym.

Naveah Hines-Bass paced the Saints with 14 points.

The Cougars snapped a five-game skid in the series.
