KENANSVILLE — James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) recently launched an apprenticeship program that would allow students to earn classroom credit while working in an area of their desired industry. Students can even receive an income while obtaining hands-on training in their field of study. Kristalee Stevenson is their first success story.

As a Swine Management Technology student under the leadership of instructor Star Jackson, an apprenticeship with Smithfield Hog Production was a natural fit! Stevenson reflects, “My apprenticeship was offered to me through the company at Smithfield Hog Production. One of the trainers asked me if I would be interested, and of course, I jumped right into this awesome opportunity! I was able to further my education for free through JSCC. If that opportunity had never been given to me, I would never have returned to college.”

Stevenson shares that she has enjoyed learning more about all areas of agriculture through the hands-on opportunities her apprenticeship experience has provided. Stevenson has gained experience in farm management, animal waste management, and livestock production. As a single mom of three boys, Stevenson is also thankful for the opportunity to make money while gaining credit toward her educational goals.

“Working with JSCC has been super easy,” states Stevenson. I think that the experience that I have had is great, and I would recommend others in this area to explore JSCC as well.”

JSCC is proud of the accomplishments of Kristalee Stevenson and looks forward to connecting many more students with the opportunities that apprenticeships offer. For more information on this resource, please contact Elizabeth Howard at ehoward@jamessprunt.edu or (901) 275-6285.
