Challenging pin placements caused some frustration during the final Quad County 3A girls’ golf match played at Southern Wayne Country Club Monday.

Fast-rolling greens created some trouble, too.

Unlike their previous seven meets, the linksters played the full 18 holes. Tree-lined fairways forced accuracy off the tee and some competitors found themselves either hitting from the trees or taking a club-length drop.

Despite the physical tests, seven golfers recorded sub-100 rounds and four scored 84 or lower. Fike’s Bree Council emerged as the medalist with an 81, followed by West Johnston’s Jenna Underwood (82) and Fike’s tandem of Payton Durham (83) and Avery Briley (84).

Fike posted a team-low 248.

“Today was a good and fair test for all the girls,” Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee said. “Some of the pins were tucked in tricky spots. If you got on the wrong side the hole, it was difficult to get down in two.”

SW recorded a fourth-place team total of 316.

Three regional qualifiers — sophomore Regan Stribble (100), senior Laura Summerlin (106) and senior Catie Schallert (110) — accounted for the Saints’ team score. Stribble received all-QCC accolades.

Emily Webster, who received the QCC sportsmanship award for Southern Wayne, carded a 117.

Chloe Sullivan fired a 121.

“I am so proud of this team,” McKee said. “They have come so far. Each day they have worked hard to improve. The girls’ good shots have become more frequent and they have learned a lot on how to deal with bad shots or bad breaks.”

Council received QCC player-of-the-year awards, while Fike’s Glenn Jones was tabbed QCC coach-of-the-year.

Southern Wayne returns to action Oct. 23 for the NC High School Athletic Association east 3A regionals at Wedgewood Golf Course in Wilson.

“[Three regional qualifiers] is the most we have had in a very long time,” McKee said. “I am excited for them to have the opportunity to move and hopefully play in the state championship tournament. I have had a blast coaching these girls. They are all great young ladies with great families and support systems.

“It’s been fun.”
