DUDLEY — Southern Wayne collected a signature victory in dominating fashion and bolstered its postseason aspirations Wednesday evening.
Mylee Wiggs flirted with a double-double and helped the Saints stun South Johnston 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 in a Quad County 3A volleyball affair. The three-set sweep snapped a 17-match skid against the Trojans since 2009.
South entered the game ranked among the east’s top-five 3A teams and had endured just one QCC loss this season.
A sophomore outside hitter, Wiggs stuffed her stat sheet with eight kills, nine digs and five service aces. The two-year varsity starter recorded nine or more digs for the eighth time this season and has cranked out 27 kills during her last three games.
Jy’Asha Cousins contributed eight kills and two blocks. Ilescia Warner logged a team-high six blocks. Senior Gracie Hinson recorded four kills, three blocks and four digs.
Karlie Lane led the defense with 18 digs and served three aces. Taylor Lee registered 15 assists and five digs. Kara Davis collected three digs, three assists and two aces.
As a team, the Saints hit .060 and recorded a season-high 72 digs. Meanwhile, the Trojans hit .095 and exited with an eye-popping 113 digs as a team.
Southern Wayne (9-9 overall, 5-6 QCC) visits Smithfield-Selma today. The JV match begins at 4 p.m.
SW seniors fare well
DUDLEY — Southern Wayne’s senior trio — Allya Segura, Amy Lemus and Juliana Leon — experienced victory during their season-ending, 7-2 loss against Charles B. Aycock Wednesday.
Segura and doubles mate Charity Van Dyke rallied from an 0-3 deficit to defeat the Golden Falcons’ top-seeded tandem of Allie Gray-Laura Moore, 8-5. Lemus-Leon prevailed 8-6 over CBA’s Alyssa Pitt-Aubrey Edmundson at No. 2.
“Amy, Juliana and Allya have all greatly improved throughout their tennis careers and will be next season,” SW head coach David Van Dyke said. “The girls played an excellent match against CBA. Their coach [Donald Clark] remarked to me that he thought our returning players had gotten better, and how close our matches had been this year. He said the final scores didn’t indicate how competitive they were.
“Hopefully, this will give the team confidence for next week’s conference tournament. [We’re] hoping to send some players to the regionals.”
Van Dyke selected Leon as player of the match.
The Saints (2-12 overall, 2-12 Quad County 3A) and Golden Falcons return to action next Tuesday and Wednesday in the conference tournament at Smithfield-Selma. The two-day event will determine the league’s singles and doubles qualifiers for the east 3A regionals.
