CALYPSO — North Duplin’s frustrations on its home pitch continued Monday evening against hungry, quick and determined Union.

The Spartans built a two-goal lead during the first 20 minutes and used the momentum as the springboard to a 4-1 conquest of the Rebels at H.E. Grubbs Field. Union snapped a five-game skid against its Carolina 1A rival.

North Duplin dropped to 0-3-1 on its home pitch.

Rebels net-minder Isaias Santos Santander stayed busy between the pipes. The sophomore logged a school-record and career-high 25 saves, which broke his previous mark of 24 set a year ago in the playoffs.

The Spartans’ Rafael Santiago opened the scoring in the sixth minute.

Teammate Jeyck Laguna notched the next two goals in the 20th and 58th minutes. Hugo Urieta collected Union’s final marker in the 78th minute.

Crismy Gonzalez-Vazquez accounted for the Rebels’ lone goal — a penalty kick conversion in the 67th minute. Vazquez, a senior, boosted his team-leading total to 10 goals this season.

North Duplin (2-5-2 overall, 0-2-1 Carolina 1A) travels to two-time defending Carolina 1A champ Rosewood on Wednesday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Branch Pope Field.

Union (6-4, 2-1) entertains Hobbton the same evening.
