SEVEN SPRINGS — Spring Creek continued its recent mastery over former East Central 2A rival East Duplin on the soccer pitch with a 2-0 victory Monday evening.
Homar Lopez-Castro and Ozias “Z” Miteu tallied one goal apiece for the Gators. Miteu and Diego Lopez Morales each logged an assist on the stat sheet.
The Panthers hold a 5-4-2 edge in the series since 2017, but the Gators are 4-1-2 in their last seven meetings.
Spring Creek (4-7-0 overall) continues play Thursday at perennial powerhouse Wallace-Rose Hill. Kickoff is 6 p.m. in Teachey.
Saints’ Velasquez has career night
WILSON — Daniel Velasquez cranked out a season- and career-high five goals to lead Southern Wayne past Hunt, 9-0, in their Quad County 3A boys’ soccer match Monday evening.
Osbaldo Avila provided two goals and three assists. Miguel Campuzano supplied two goals and one assist. The duo has combined for 14 goals and 11 assists this season.
Cesar Espinoza dished out two assists.
Bryan Hernandez, Skerverson Aphael and Jesus Giron Castillo contributed one assist apiece. The Saints have tallied 28 assists on 32 goals scored this season.
Keeper Joey Segura collected three saves and logged his fourth clean sheet (shutout) between the pipes.
The Saints improved to 4-0-1 against the Warriors since 2021.
Southern Wayne (7-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 QCC) visits South Johnston on Wednesday.
Rebels drop heartbreaker
SMITHFIELD — North Duplin got balanced scoring during its 5-4 loss to Neuse Charter on Monday evening.
It was the Carolina 1A boys’ soccer opener for both teams.
Sophomore forward Victor Lara Mata, senior forward Crismy Gonzalez-Vazquez, sophomore midfielder Juan Chavez Jaurez and senior midfielder Nilmar Cabrera each tallied one goal for the Rebels.
Junior midfielder Henry Lopez Ramirez collected an assist.
The Rebels attempted six shots on goal.
Keeper Isaias Santos Santander recorded 15 saves.
North Duplin (2-4-1 overall, 0-1 Carolina 1A) visit Lakewood on Wednesday.
Wildcats knock off Saints
BENSON — Southern Wayne senior Amy Lemus earned player-of-the-match honors from head coach David Van Dyke during a 9-0 loss to Quad County 3A girls’ tennis rival West Johnston on Monday afternoon.
Lemus, a senior, dropped a competitive 6-2, 6-2 match to Emily Buckler at No. 3 singles.
The Panthers swept the singles and doubles courts.
Cara King and Leah Perry competed in exhibition singles for the Saints.
Southern Wayne (2-6 overall, 2-6 QCC) visits Goldsboro today and returns home Wednesday to face QCC foe Hunt.
