DUDLEY — Osbaldo Avila and Daniel Velasquez provided the second-half offensive punch Southern Wayne needed during its wild, 6-4 conquest of Quad County 3A boys’ soccer foe West Johnston Wednesday evening.

Avila scored twice on assists from Miguel Campuzano and Luiz Velasquez. Velasquez posted two goals on assists from Avila and Campuzano.

The Saints led 2-1 at halftime on an own goal and Campuzano’s unassisted score.

Keeper Joey Segura logged seven saves between the pipes.

Southern Wayne (6-2 overall, 1-1 QCC) starts a two-game road swing next Monday at winless Hunt (0-6-1) and visits South Johnston on Sept. 20.

Hyde, Randolph lead Saints

WENDELL — Sophomores Kylie Hyde and Ameya Randolph earned player-of-the-match accolades during Southern Wayne’s doubleheader sweep, 8-1 and 8-1, of East Wake on the Quad County 3A girls’ tennis Wednesday evening.

Hyde and Randolph each posted a 2-0 record in singles action, and combined for two doubles victories.

Senior Amy Lemus logged two singles points. Sophomore Charity Van Dyke, senior Juliana Leon, junior Cara King and sophomore Yeimi Sanchez Martinez each concluded the day 1-0.

The tandems of Van Dyke-Allya Segura, Lemus-Leon, Van Dyke-Leon and Sanchez Martinez-King each picked up a doubles point.

Southern Wayne (2-5 overall, 2-5 QCC) travels to West Johnston next Monday.

Saints’ Brewer takes seventh

BENSON — Southern Wayne’s Guage Brewer finished seventh overall individually during a Quad County 3A cross country meet held at West Johnston on Wednesday afternoon.

Brewer ran the 5k (3.1-mile) course in 20 minutes, 59 seconds.

Teammates Egan Hine (40th, 28:01), Jeremy Whitley (46th, 30:08) and Addison Hine (50th, 31:31.5) also competed. The Saints didn’t have enough runners to post a team score.

West Johnston sophomore Warner Clark emerged as the top runner in 20:10. Hunt and West Johnston each scored 31 team points, but Hunt walked away the team winner due to the best fifth-place finish among individual runners.

On the girls’ side, Southern Wayne finished seventh.

Edith Artega-Martinez led the Saints with a 33rd-place effort of 32:47. Olivia Ruiz ended up 40th in 35:51, while Esmina Roblerio-Perez took 41st in 36:15.

Sabrina Leon-Bohorque (42nd, 36:17) and Aliyah Williams (46th, 38:28) rounded out the team scoring.

Fike senior Erin Pope seized first overall in 18:34.
