DUDLEY — Southern Wayne snapped a four-game skid on the volleyball court with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 conquest of Quad County 3A foe Smithfield-Selma Tuesday afternoon.

Mylee Wiggs cranked out a team-leading nine kills and collected five digs defensively during the Saints’ straight-set sweep. Setter Taylor Lee supplied 13 assists, four service aces and five digs.

Middle hitter Jy’Asha Cousins pounded out eight kills. Karlie Lane had eight digs, three assists and three aces. Kara Davis recorded 12 assists and two aces.

Gracie Hinson logged seven digs.

The Saints’ much-needed triumph came after a 19-25, 11-25, 22-25 loss to county rival Rosewood on Monday.

Cousins registered seven of the team’s 14 kills on the day, posted 11 solo blocks and had two block assists. Ilescia Warner had four solo blocks, while Amya Smith turned in three block assists.

Lee doled out nine assists.

Karlie Lane (12 digs), Wiggs (five digs) and Hinson (eight digs) emerged as the defensive leaders.

Southern Wayne (5-5 overall, 2-3 QCC) entertains Fike on Thursday.

Summerlin, Stribble lead Saints

Southern Wayne finished fifth overall during a Quad County 3A girls’ golf match played at Lane Tree Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.

Laura Summerlin and Regan Stribble each posted a 53 in the nine-hole event. Catie Schallert rounded out the Saints’ three-player team score of 163. Emily Webster and Chloe Sullivan each shot 58.

The Saints return to action next Tuesday for a QCC match at Willow Springs in Wilson.

ND goalie Santander busy in net

CALYPSO — Goalie Isaias Santos Santander recorded 23 saves between the pipes during North Duplin’s 8-0, non-conference loss to Midway in boys’ soccer action Tuesday evening.

Santander came within one stop shy of matching his career high (24) set against River Mill Academy a year ago in the state 1A playoffs.

The Raiders (9-0-0 overall) scored four goals in each half.

North Duplin (2-3-0) entertains Lejeune Thursday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at H.E. Grubbs Field.

Cougars turn back Rebels

SMITHFIELD — Two-time defending Carolina 1A volleyball champion Neuse Charter extended its regular-season conference win streak to 23 games with a 25-18, 12-25, 25-15, 25-12 conquest of North Duplin Tuesday evening.

Middle hitter Eva Quintanilla stuffed her stat sheet with six kills, six digs, two solo blocks and two service aces for the Rebels. Sophomore setter Lilly Fulghum logged 13 assists, seven digs and two aces.

Junior Addy Higginbotham contributed five kills, two aces and 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Reece Outlaw provided 10 digs and three kills.

North Duplin (4-4 overall, 0-1 Carolina 1A) travel to Lakewood on Thursday.
