DUDLEY — West Johnston remained unbeaten on the Quad County 3A volleyball scene with a highly-competitive 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 conquest of Southern Wayne on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Mylee Wiggs turned in an all-around floor game with five kills, three service aces, one solo block, two block assists and five digs.
Senior Gracie Hinson contributed 11 digs and two aces. Ilescia Warner logged three solo blocks, while Karlie Lane picked up seven digs. Jy’Asha Cousins notched 11 kills and five solo blocks.
Setters Taylor Lee and Kara Davis handed out 11 and nine assists, respectively. Lee provided four digs.
As a team, the Saints posted a .088 hitting percentage with 22 kills.
Southern Wayne (4-3 overall, 1-2 QCC) visits South Johnston today. The JV match begins at 4 p.m.
Rampants blank Gators
GREENVILLE — Less than 24 hours after shutting out county rival Southern Wayne, Spring Creek endured a 3-0, non-conference loss to Big East 3A-4A member J.H. Rose on the soccer pitch Wednesday evening.
Senior goalie David Given notched three saves for the Rampants, who climbed to 7-1 overall and remained unbeaten in four home outings this season.
The Gators (2-5-0) begin a four-game home stretch Friday against Holly Ridge Dixon. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at “The Swamp.”
Rebels drop tough road contest
CAMP LEJEUNE — Lejeune emerged victorious in the final two sets and upended North Duplin 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11 on the volleyball court Wednesday evening.
Lilly Fulghum doled out 17 assists and served six aces for the Rebels, who dropped to 1-2 in five-set outings this season.
Reece Outlaw supplied 10 kills and seven digs. Addy Higginbotham registered three kills, five aces and seven digs. Eva Quintanilla cranked out five kills, while Marissa Bernal provided six digs.
North Duplin (3-3) plays host to border rival Spring Creek today. First serve is 5 p.m. in Calypso.
Saints dealt QCC tennis loss
DUDLEY — Short-handed Southern Wayne endured a 9-0 loss to state-ranked Wilson Fike in Quad County 3A girls’ tennis action Wednesday afternoon.
The teams played eight-game pro sets due to the heat and humidity.
Saints head coach David Van Dyke selected senior Allya Segura as the player of the match. Segura was just one of two Saints to avoid a shutout loss in singles play.
Van Dyke had just five players in the lineup. The Golden Demons (7-1 overall, 5-0 QCC) earned walkover points at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Southern Wayne (0-4, 0-4) is the guest of county rival Charles B. Aycock next Tuesday. First serve is 4 p.m. on the Luke Vail Tennis Courts.
