DUDLEY — Amy Lemus earned player-of-the-match honors during Southern Wayne’s 7-2 loss to Smithfield-Selma on the Quad County 3A girls’ tennis scene Tuesday afternoon.

Lemus collected her first singles win — a tightly-contested, 8-5 triumph over Spartans junior Kathryn Taylor at the No. 3 flight.

Charity Van Dyke celebrated her “sweet 16th” birthday along with Allya Segura after their 8-2 triumph over the Spartans’ tandem of Taylor-Ann Bass at No. 1 doubles. Van Dyke-Segura improved to 2-1 this season.

Coaches agreed to play eight-game pro sets due the extreme heat and humidity.

The Saints (0-3 overall, 0-3 QCC) entertain state-ranked Wilson Fike today. First serve is 3:30 p.m.

Stribble leads Saints

WILSON — Sophomore Regan Stribble fired a season-low 49 and helped Southern Wayne record its best team finish during a Quad County 3A girls’ golf match played at Willow Springs Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

“Stribble got up and down for par on a green-side bunker,” said first-year Saints head coach Trae McKee.

Emily Webster carded a 55. Laura Summerlin and Catie Schallert each posted a nine-hole round of 56. Chloe Sullivan turned in a 62. As a team, the Saints managed their speed on the greens and shaved 11 strokes off their team average. They ended up fourth overall.

“Hopefully, we can continue to minimize the shots around the greens so we can take advantage of our drives and ball striking,” McKee said. “All the girls are showing improvements. If we can clean up a few things around the greens and capitalize when we have scoring opportunities, we will continue to shoot lower scores.”

Southern Wayne returns to action Sept. 12 at Lane Tree Golf Course. Tee time for the QCC meet is 2 p.m.
