GOLDSBORO — Spring Creek launched its 2023 girls’ tennis campaign with a 7-0, non-conference triumph over Wayne Prep Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gators swept the doubles courts and prevailed at No. 1 doubles.

Emily Williams, Linna Kornegay and Kennedy Denton each logged an 8-0, pro-set victory in the scorebook. Janice Lopez and Katelynn Harrison defeated their respective opponents 8-1.

Emma Gainey won 9-7 at No. 3 singles.

Williams-Denton claimed an 8-1 decision at No. 1 doubles.

The Gators (1-0 overall) return home Sept. 6 for a doubleheader against Neuse Six 2A rival North Johnston.

Saints joust Knights

RED OAK — Unbeaten Southern Wayne knocked off Northern Nash, 2-0, in boys’ soccer action Tuesday evening.

Skerverson Alphael and Osbaldo Avila tallied one goal apiece for the Saints. Teammates Cesar Espinoza and Miguel Campuzano each doled out an assist.

The Saints (4-0-0 overall) entertain Spring Creek next Tuesday. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Cougars knock off Rebels

GOLDSBORO — Goldsboro seized a four-goal advantage in the opening half and cruised past North Duplin, 7-3, in their non-conference boys’ soccer affair Tuesday evening.

Senior forward Crismy Gonzalez-Vazquez logged a hat trick (three goals), including a penalty-kick conversion.

Sophomore Victor Lara Mata provided one assist.

North Duplin has a 7-22-2 worksheet against Wayne County opposition since 2014. Weather permitting, the Rebels (2-1-0) play host to Southside Christian on Thursday. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at H.E. Grubbs Field.

Rebels sweep Tigers

WARSAW — North Duplin served up 18 team aces during a 25-10, 25-21, 25-22 non-conference sweep over county volleyball rival James Kenan inside Harmon Gym on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore setter Lilly Fulghum paced the service attack with six aces, while Sarah Thomas Tucker served four. Addy Higginbotham supplied three aces.

Fulghum doled out 17 assists and collected five digs on defense. Higginbotham contributed four kills and seven digs. Eva Quintanilla contributed three kills and three solo blocks.

Valaja Wallace and M’Chelle Jaco registered five and three digs, respectively. Meghan Martin had two solo blocks and three digs.

Reece Outlaw turned in eight kills, three solo blocks and seven digs.

The Rebels (3-2 overall) notched 37 digs as a team en route to their 14th consecutive conquest of the Tigers, who dropped to 0-5 overall. The teams meet again Thursday in Calypso.
