GOLDSBORO — The threat of tropical storm conditions from Hurricane Idalia, which lashed the Florida coast early Wednesday morning, prompted Wayne County Public Schools officials to cancel all after-school activities and athletic events Thursday.
The storm is expected to produce high winds and flash flooding.
“The school district is closely monitoring the weather forecasts for our area and will remain in close communications with local emergency management officials throughout this weather event,” said Ken Derksen, executive director of community engagement and student/family support, in a statement released earlier.
WCPS administrators will continue to monitor the weather and decide later whether to possibly cancel classes Thursday.
Spring Creek, North Duplin and James Kenan plan to play football Friday evening, according to their respective athletic directors. Spring Creek (0-2 overall) entertains Wayne Christian, while North Duplin (2-0) plays host to Lejeune.
James Kenan (2-0) visits Whiteville.
“[We’re] still hoping to play varsity Friday,” said JK athletic director/head football coach Tim Grady. “I’m guessing JV will not be played this week, but we shall see how this pans out.“
All three games kick off at 7 p.m.
Southern Wayne is off this week and travels to county rival Rosewood on Sept. 8.
