La GRANGE — North Lenoir dealt Southern Wayne a 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8 loss on the volleyball court inside Wooten Gym Thursday evening.
Taylor Lee logged 16 assists, 12 digs and served four aces for the Saints.
Jy’Asha Cousins pounded out a team-leading 15 kills and collected four blocks. Sophomore Mylee Wiggs turned in a solid all-around floor game with nine kills, four aces, three blocks and a team-high 12 digs.
Kara Davis doled out 13 assists and collected five digs. Karlie Lane contributed nine digs and four service aces. Sophomore Ilescia Warner recorded a team-best six blocks.
Amya Smith registered four kills. Senior Gracie Hinson provided five kills and seven digs.
Southern Wayne had 37 kills and 47 digs as a team.
The Saints (1-1 overall) are the guests of county rival Goldsboro today. Game time is 5 p.m. at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium.
Rebels fall to Panthers
CALYPSO — North Duplin opened its 2023 season with a 22-25, 15-25, 13-25 loss against county rival East Duplin on Thursday afternoon.
Multi-sport athlete Reece Outlaw paced the Rebels with five kills and five digs. Senior Meghan Martin stuffed her stat sheet with four kills, three service aces and three digs.
Sophomore Lilly Fulghum contributed two aces and eight assists.
Eva Quintanilla registered four kills.
The Rebels (0-1 overall) visit Spring Creek next Tuesday.
Saints JV drop football opener
GOLDSBORO — Southern Wayne launched its 2023 junior varsity football campaign with a 32-6 loss to cross-county rival Eastern Wayne on Thursday evening.

The Saints (0-1 overall) return home Sept. 7 against Rosewood. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
