DUDLEY — Southern Wayne cranked out 24 kills and posted a .346 hitting percentage as a team during its season-opening, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11 triumph over county volleyball rival Goldsboro on Wednesday evening.
The Saints ended a 13-match skid against the Cougars.
Junior multi-sport athlete Jy’Asha Cousins paced the Saints’ attack with eight kills, while sophomore Mylee Wiggs logged seven kills. The two combined for just one hitting error in 24 attempts.
Cousins collected three blocks.
Wiggs and junior setter Taylor Lee served three aces apiece. Lee doled our 14 assists, while senior Kara Davis had seven.
Senior Karli Lane emerged as the defensive leader with 10 digs, followed by senior Gracie Hinson with seven. The Saints posted 30 digs as a team.
Directed by second-year head coach Hannah Sladick, the Saints (1-0 overall) visit perennial 2A power North Lenoir today. First serve is 5 p.m. inside Wooten Gymnasium.
