BUIES CREEK — Wayne County Post 11 has switched to elimination mode in the 2023 NC Senior American Legion state baseball tournament.
Fuquay-Varina Post 116 built a sizable advantage through two innings and cruised to a 10-4 victory at Jim Perry Stadium on the Campbell University campus Wednesday evening.
Wayne County (31-7 overall) opposes three-time defending state champion Wilmington Post 10 in a losers’ bracket contest today at 4:30 p.m.
Lead-off batter Will Lassiter paced Post 11’s offense with three hits and two RBI. Mason Moffett, Davis Albert (RBI), Braeden Collins and Alex Ferrell contributed one hit apiece.
Carter Gipson endured the mound loss. The rising sophomore at the University of Mount Olive permitted five runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out one.
Middle reliever Erik Rosas, an UMO signee, provided 2 2/3 innings of two-hit, two-strikeout relief. Jason Jenkins allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Mac Gillespie and Pierce Bouwman combined for six hits and three RBI.
Bouwman surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits, issued two free passes and walked four. Reliever Bryce Dail tossed one inning of one-strikeout relief.
