What’s your favorite Dewey decimal number? Mine is the 700’s – the arts. Music, games, and most of all, crafts! I could spend all day thumbing through books of sewing patterns, paper crafts, holiday decorations, and on and on. That’s why I am so excited to share the newest addition to Steele Memorial Library – our makerspace!

A makerspace can be made up of all sorts of equipment to encourage communities to create and learn. Ours will have quite a variety of tools – 3D printers to create anything from a cute pen holder to that one specific part that broke on your vacuum; a sewing machine to mend beloved clothes or completely revamp your wardrobe; a Cricut to cut paper for scrapbooking or vinyl for a fun new coffee mug; a plotter printer to print out an aerial map of your childhood home or help create a display for work; and knitting needles and crochet hooks galore to fill your self-care time with scarves and stuffed creatures.

Right now we are gearing up to have our space ready for you all to use in September. The staff is learning how to use the different equipment and figuring out where their strengths are to help you get the most out of this space. If you already have these skills and would enjoy sharing them with other Mount Olive residents, please call Steele Memorial Library at 919-299-8105 or stop in to talk about your interests. We would also welcome any yarn, fabric, thread, and scrapbook paper you might have cluttering up your home – you won’t believe the amount of yarn I’ve brought in to donate! This project was made possible through a generous donation to the Wayne County Public Library Foundation by the William W. Capel & Ernest J. Martin III Family Foundation.

We have a survey available in the library and online if you would like to share how you would like to use the space, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SteeleMakerspace, and as always, check out our website, wcpl.org, for more details about events happening at all of the Wayne County Public Library branches this summer.
