GOLDSBORO — The late Tommy King loved his family, bike riding and community service.

All three of those passions will be recognized and shared Wednesday, June 6, through the second annual Two-Wheelers for Tommy that will provide new bicycles for under-served children.

The public can participate by making donations to help purchase the bikes and/or by volunteering to roll the bicycles from their William Street warehouse, 126 S. James St., to The Hub, 200 S. Center St., at 6 p.m. where they will be presented to the children.

A project of the nonprofit Kriquette’s Kidz, the goal is 104 new bicycles.

Donate through Venmo or by mailing a check to Kriquette’s Kidz, P.O. Box 11062, 3100 Chashwell Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. 27532-11062.

“I need what I call bicycle chaperones, and we’re giving away 104 bicycles, which means I need 104 people or families because a lot of people last year did it as a family, which was the best,” said Kriquette Davis, CEO and founder of Kriquette’s Kidz.

“They’ll meet at the warehouse on James Street. It’s only a couple of blocks to The Hub and so they will roll the bikes down to The Hub and the families will be waiting at The Hub.”

To volunteer, call Davis at 919-222-8483 or sign up as a volunteer through Signup Genius.

“I got a grant for helmets from the North Carolina Department of Transportation,” Davis added. “So we’re going to be able to give away helmets, too. I work with Wayne County Public Schools and then a lot of nonprofits in the county as well as most of the doctors’ offices because most have social workers, too. They refer families to me for all everything we do — the Christmas outreach we do, the help with utilities that we do.

“Everything that we do, it’s all referral based. That way I know that we’re touching the families that are really in need. So that’s how they’re selected and we don’t serve the same family twice. So if the kids got a bicycle last year, they will not get one this year because basically I just want to spread the love.”

King was known throughout Wayne County for his audio-visual expertise, providing DJ and audio/visual services to families and businesses throughout eastern North Carolina.

He served on the board of directors at Wayne Preparatory Academy and the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.

King was a past chairman of the Wayne County Young Professionals Group and served as chairman of the Wayne County Career and STEAM Fair, was part of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and was an honorary commander for the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee.

“Tommy loved his community and volunteered his time and provided professional services for several nonprofits including Kriquette’s Kidz, Communities Supporting Schools of Wayne County, Literacy Connections and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County,” Davis said. “He was an avid biker and loved music, his gun collection, all things barbecue, and spending time with his friends.

“But above all, he was a loving and doting father to three beautiful girls, Camryn, Lola and Charlotte. He shared his love of bicycles with all of them. This was the role he was most passionate about and the one that came so naturally to him. He was devoted to his longtime partner, best friend, and mother of his two youngest children, Jacqueline Kannan.”

Last year, Kings’ daughters helped roll out bicycles, she added.

King was a friend to so many and would make the party happen wherever he went, and his legacy will live on as one of the great entertainers and personalities of the social scene in the community, Davis added.

April 15 was the deadline for information for ordering the bicycles through Bicycle World, a sponsor for the giveaway. Bicycle World assembles the bicycles free of charge.

Getting the information ahead of time allows the order to take into account a child’s size so that the bicycles are appropriate for a child’s size, Davis said.

Davis said her nonprofit has many people and groups that provide in-kind services.

“Since we basically operate out of my house, I am kind of at the mercy of the community and everybody’s always really great,” she added.

Bicycle World owner Mike Wiggins and his wife are awesome, she said.

“They are so good to everybody in the community,” Davis added.

David Perry of Perry Real Estate is the presenting sponsor for the event, and Allen Grading Co. has provided the warehouse to store the bicycles.

In case of inclement weather the giveaway will be held in the warehouse
