ROSE HILL — North Duplin’s Lilly Fulghum logged eight strikeouts — and a no-hitter — in the scorebook during an 18-1, mercy-rule victory over Carolina 1A softball rival Union on Tuesday evening.

Fulghum retired 12 of the final 13 batters she faced and struck out the side in the fifth.

Union drew two walks and put just three runners on base. The Spartans scored their lone run in the first inning.

Addy Higginbotham belted two home runs and finished the day 4-for-4 with two RBI. Fulghum provided a career-high five RBI during her 3-for-4 outing at the plate.

Reece Outlaw contributed two hits.

Riley Hatch (two RBI), Kasey Jones (RBI) and Sarah Tucker supplied one hit apiece.

Lead-off batter Iala Overton drew three walks and stole two bases.

The Rebels (7-1 overall, 2-0 Carolina) return home Thursday to face conference rival Rosewood. First pitch is 6 p.m.
