At the recently Duplin County Board of Education meeting, Deputy Philip Jones, School Resource Officer at North Duplin Jr./Sr. High School, received a special award for above and beyond dedication to protecting children last October.

During the early morning on October 18, 2017, a pre-school bus broke down on Highway 403 near the high school. Deputy Jones was directing traffic from the shoulder near the disabled vehicle when an SUV struck him, knocking him off the roadway. He suffered injuries to his upper body. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

Jones credited his vest for preventing more damage.
