Armed with funds in a new budget the first of the month, and a newly hired young Recreation Director, Faison is fixing up the town’s Recreation Center.
Several projects were approved earlier this month during the monthly Faison Town Board meeting.
Mayor Carolyn Kenyon, Town Clerk Sharon Lee, Public Works Director Jimmy Tyndall, and Recreation Director Robert Mullis presented painting contracts, gym floor refurbishing, and treadmill replacement bids during the meeting. Despite some legal concerns about the lack of bidders on some projects, the mayor and staff assured the board that the bids received were reasonable and from reputable contractors.
The biggest single item was the resurfacing of the tennis courts. Town Commissioner Carlos Quintanilla asked members of his family, who are active tennis instructors, and they endorsed the company and the plan to refurbish the courts, which have significant cracks.
Mayor Kenyon said the town had been advised to completely re-construct the courts several years ago, at a cost of $70,000. New technology has been developed to effectively fix the cracks and to re-seal the surface. The staff and Mr. Quintanilla recommended a bid of $31,450 from North State be accepted to do the work.
