The Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority’s new circular transportation service kicks off in Mount Olive on July 2. The service includes new connector service between Mount Olive and Goldsboro and, upon request, a stop at the Greyhound stop on U.S. 117.

Officials say the pilot effort, a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the GWTA, and the Town of Mount Olive, has been funded for one year and will continue if there is enough ridership participation.

Mount Olive Mayor Joe Scott expressed excitement at the new transportation schedule and service for local residents, saying it will fill a void. The mayor, town board members, and others were given an early view of what the new service will provide with a transit tour on Friday of last week.

The new weekday service will circulate through the town on an hourly schedule via Church Street and Breazeale Avenue, beginning at Walmart on NC Highway 55 from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m.

There will be no weekend service, officials said.

There are 22 assigned stops that officials say are conveniently located throughout town, including stops at Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, the Carver Center, Roses, Mount Olive Pickle Company, and Bobby Denning Shopping Center. Officials said residents need to look for GWTA bus stop signs located along the route. They also said if you request an hour in advance, the transit bus will pick you up at the designated and requested location.

Connecting services from Mount Olive to Goldsboro will depart from Walmart at 7 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. Service from Goldsboro to Mount Olive will depart from the GWTA Transfer Center on N. Carolina Street at 5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 4:30 p.m. The Mount Olive to Goldsboro connector may stop at the N.C. 117 Greyhound Station upon request. Connections are also available for AMTRAK and Greyhound at the GWTA Transfer Center in Goldsboro.

The service will be free the week of July 2 to July 6. There will be no service on July 4. After July 6, a trip on the Mount Olive circulator will be $1 per person. A trip on the Mount Olive to Goldsboro connector is $3 per person.
