A Maryland man currently visiting in Mount Olive has been arrested for threatening to rob the Center Street Wells Fargo Bank around noon on Wednesday of last week.

56-year-old Gary R. Peebles of Clinton, Maryland was arrested before even being able to flee with money a clerk gave him after he allegedly threatened to rob the bank.

The Mount Olive Police Department is located a block away from the bank and officers were there minutes after being alerted.

Officials told the Tribune the man had entered the bank earlier in the morning in an attempt to draw what he said was a disability check. They said there was an identification issue and the man left.

He returned again around noon. There was another issue and investigators said the man raised his shirt, showing a weapon. It turned out to be a toy gun, but a clerk gave the man $4,000 cash and he was greeted as he went outside by Mount Olive Police. Three patrol cars and officers at the scene took the man into custody without incident.

He was taken to the Wayne County Jail, and is being held in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
