UMO's lacrosse teams ranked in preseason


SPARKS, Maryland - The University of Mount Olive men’s and women’s lacrosse teams are ranked in the 2022 Nike/USA Lacrosse Division II preseason top 20 polls.

The Trojan stickmen are 10th. Co-Conference Carolinas regular-season champions last spring, they advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second time in school history.

The Trojan women are ranked 18th. They earned the No. 3 seed in the 2021 NCAA Division II South Region playoffs a year ago.

Regular-season play begins Feb. 4.

UMO picked 2nd

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive men’s and women’s tennis teams have been picked second in their respective 2022 Conference Carolinas preseason polls voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Belmont Abbey received three first-place nods and is the preseason favorite by three points over the Trojan men and Barton. UMO garnered three first-place votes, while Barton picked up five.

Players to watch include senior Armando Ferreira, who has won three consecutive conference player-of-the-year awards; sophomore Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Elios Briand from France.

The University of Mount Olive women’s tennis team has been picked second in the 2022 Conference Carolinas preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches.

The Trojans collected three first-place votes and 108 points - just seven points behind preseason favorite Erskine.

UMO returns two first-team all-conference players - junior Ingrid Montserrat and Liza Voloshyna. Also back is Nele Weber.

Hudjakova honored

GREENVILLE, S.C. - University of Mount Olive’s Ivanda Hudjakova has been named the Conference Carolinas women’s basketball player of the week.

The senior forward collected a double-double - 20 points, 10 rebounds - in a 64-56 victory over Anderson University on Dec. 26. She added five steals and shot 40 percent from the floor.

The Trojans are 8-0 overall.

Academic success

UMO student-athletes had another successful fall semester in the classroom with 14 of 20 teams logging a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher.

Women’s tennis had the highest team GPA of 3.797.

Men’s lacrosse, baseball and women’s field hockey also recorded their highest GPAs.

A total of 44 student-athletes filed a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Tennis: Greg Normand, Maria Garcia Impalea, Deike Schipper.

Basketball: Ivanda Hudjakova, Jeremiah Phifer, Don Pigford.

Track and field: Tanner Smith, Candise Lockett, Elizabeth Lopez.

Soccer: Emma Campbell, Erica Boswell, Mikaela Lawler, Emily Sanders, Sten Engren, Daniel Hanna, Andres Herrera, Christian Jaimes, Daniel Miller.

Softball: Carly Curcio, Emma Mooney, Olivia Reardon.

Volleyball: Camryn Huber, Morgan Prots, Oluwatobi Azeez, Jarrod Ferguson.

Field hockey: Fenna Brandsma, Annefleur Moerkerken.

Lacrosse: Blake Tallon, Lena DeFilippo, Zoe Dougherty, Emery Kennedy, Allison Davis.

Baseball: Will Albert, Matt Kornegay, Logan Price, Marshall Weinberg
