Town officials said providing trash service is a vital cost-saving measure to Mount Olive residents.
The town spends $250,000 a year to contract out its garbage collection.
Beginning in mid-summer, the town’s public works department will handle trash pickup four days a week to approximately 2,500 town residents. Yard waste is scheduled for pickup on Wednesday.
The department will also receive a new garbage truck on July 1. The vehicle is valued at $136,000, but the town is making a considerable down payment and setting up monthly installments at $2,000, according to Town Manager Jammie Royall.
Fleet Management will handle the truck maintenance.
The town has also purchased 2,500 rollout carts that cost about $100 apiece.
Royall said savings will become evident after the first year.
