Sidewalks will be in place sometime next spring along a two-block stretch of South Church Street.
Officials have just authorized the design phase of the sidewalk construction.
Town Manager Charles Brown said plans call for construction of sidewalks on the east side of South Church, between Franklin and Hillsboro streets.
He said the work will be paid for by Powell Bill Aid money, and said the town has set aside about $150,000 for the project that will be done by in-house public works personnel.
The town has recently completed a bicycle and pedestrian study that recommended the two-block area.
The town manager said once the design stage of the project has been completed it will clear the way for the work to begin.
“This project is badly needed for the safety of pedestrian traffic along the South Church Street area,” said the town manager.
He said the next sidewalk project will be aimed at continuing from Hillsboro Street over to Center Street, another two-block stretch.
Brown said right now there is no time frame for that project.
The engineering firm of McGill Associates has been employed to do the design stage of the sidewalk project.
