Third UMO student dies after car crash


The University of Mount Olive announced Tuesday morning that a third student involved in last week’s deadly vehicle crash has succumbed to his injuries.

A senior business major and former baseball player, Jett Swetland died.

“We are extremely sad to share the news of the passing of Jett Swetland,” said Dr. Ed Croom, interim president of UMO. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Swetland family at this time, and for the many difficult days ahead. The UMO family continues to struggle with the devastating loss of these young and talented members of our campus community.”

Swetland is from Sparta, Ohio.

Freshman Madison Mergi of Sayville, New York, and sophomore Ann Wray of Oakland, New Jersey, died at the accident scene early last Friday morning. They were members of the women’s lacrosse team.

Four women’s lacrosse players remain hospitalized at Vidant Greenville - Alex Eubanks of Bowie, Maryland; Chaney Partrich of Chapin, South Carolina; Amber McCarthy of Havelock and Tiffany Lee of Gambrills, Maryland.
