Sidewalk project will not hamper routine street repairs, officials say

Plans to install sidewalks on the east side of South Church Street along a two-block stretch from Franklin to Hillsboro streets will not have any impact on routine annual street improvements, according to Mount Olive officials.

“The sidewalks will not have any impact whatsoever on our routine street improvement plans, because the sidewalk monies have already been set aside from Powell Aid appropriations,” said Town Manager Charles Brown.

He said the expense for the sidewalks is approximately $150,000.

The street improvement plans and streets to be targeted are currently being reviewed.

Brown said streets to be improved next will be announced within two weeks.

Four to six streets will be on the improvement list, he said.

The town gets $130,000 annually in Powell Aid street improvement funds.

Brown did say preliminary engineering work on the sidewalk plans are nearing completion.

That work is scheduled for next spring.
